DVRs Killed the Video Star

Back in the day... we used to use things called VIDEO TAPES to record stuff off of TV. During part of the 90s, I spent way too much time would often record videos off of MTV, VH1, CMT and, or course, the cable access Christian video show (which was actually really horrible, it was all we had).  I had a friend who didn't have cable, so I took it upon myself to supply her with the amazingness her parents denied her... not allowing cable in the house.  Yep, I was a video pusher.  And she was grateful.

Anyway... I came across one of these videos a couple of weeks ago.

The videos. Oh, the epic videos.

Everything from Michael Bolton to Garth Brooks to Cyndi Lauper.  True, everything was pretty cheesy, and I am not proud to admit I own an old video tape with Michael Bolton on it, but life goes on.

Speaking of life goes on... through the videos, I literally saw the death of 80s hair bands and the birth of grunge. I saw the video "Life Goes On" by Poison, and thought, how sad... and ironic. I also saw "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which Lucy quickly responded to with, "Weird Al did a song like that." Sigh... she has so much to learn.

I kind of made Lucy watch My daughter did watch some of the videos with me. It spawned some interesting topics of conversation.

"Wow, that's Toby Mac? He looks so weird!" in response to the DCTalk Heavenbound video.  Once again, thanks to the cheesy cable access Christan video show... which, in retrospect, played Carman WAY too much.

"Why are they holding up lighters?" when watching the Extreme "More Than Words" video. I really didn't have a good way to explain this to her since she hasn't been to many concerts... and it's kind of a stupid ting to do anyway... especially with how much flammable hairspray was used during that time in our culture.  I also imparted the wisdom of Gary Cherone's short stint as the lead singer of Van Halen, but I think that was too much for her.

"Oh my gosh, that mullet is amazing!" -Steven Curtis Chapman in the 1990s before his Great Adventure. Need I say more?

"What does VH1 stand for?" Duh! Video Hits One! Just like MTV stands Music Television. Oh, wait. That should be past tense.

"That guy looks funny. Is that her real dad?" in regards to Captain Lou Albano in the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" video.

I am not going to lie. I did rewind the Time Will Tell by Nelson video a few times. Gunnar was hot in that one, which is odd because I usually preferred Matthew and his bangs. Is it sad that I think that one identical twin was cuter than the other based on BANGS? Oh, the 90s.

Ok, so I am kind of embarrassed for even owning this... and even more embarrassed at my admission of being a fan of Nelson. In fact, there may or may not be a copy of their CD in my desk drawer.

I know you are jealous.
